I have a friend who, for years, never talked about herself. We would be in a conversation with people and when the obligatory question, “tell me about yourself” came up, she’d say “I’m the most boring and uninteresting person in the world.” One day I decided to find out her story. No one, in my mind, is boring, and it turns out that she was just the opposite.

My friend went through college and received two engineering degrees in a discipline that was primarily suited for males. She worked as a civilian on a large Air Force Base, earned multiple certifications, lost more than 200 pounds before reality television exploited that feat, and became a semi-professional ball room dancer. All of that was before I even met her! After I met her, she adopted numerous animals, received numerous accolades in her job, and achieved much more because of her intelligence that was hidden behind her pretty face. Why would someone like that claim they were ‘boring’ and ‘uninteresting’? She probably thought that her story was nothing notable and her achievements common among many. In fact, they are not.

My point is that every person has a story. Not only do we all have a story, but it’s our front door. If you’ve never told your story, you should, even if it is to just yourself. Write it down. Make a video. Create a blog. Choose your favorite way to communicate it. Share it.

Tell someone your story and then ask for theirs. I’ll start; what’s your story?
