A few years ago, my family and I took a weekend vacation to Cozumel. New to Mexico travel, we went online and found what appeared to be the perfect ‘deal’. We found a good airfare, a rental car, and a hotel right on the beach. The hotel was modest because who spends time in a hotel in Mexico anyway, right? We quickly skimmed the reviews (which averaged 3.5/5) and thought the $100-a-night cheaper price was a steal. Only one or two of the reviews were brutal, but they both mentioned air conditioning issues and that we “would be miserable in Mexico in August in this hotel.” Again, who spends time in a hotel on vacation anyway? We snatched up the deal and booked it right away. Three weeks later – guess what? There were air conditioning problems in the hotel in Mexico and it was one hundred degrees outside. We were “miserable in Mexico.”
A recent survey shows that in 2017, 97% of consumers looked online before they purchased a product from a local business. 85% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations and positive reviews make 73% of consumers trust a business more.
Reviews are now a part of the buying process and consumers depend on them.
